The slogan - Ke Nako. Celebrate Africa's Humanity - was revealed by the chairman of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Organizing Committee South Africa, Irvin Khoza, during the worldwide broadcast of the Preliminary Draw TV show at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Conference Center (ICC) in Durban, South Africa.
This is the first time that the World Cup is being staged in Africa and great excitement and anticipation surrounds every milestone in the run up to one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
Africa is a continent with a rich reservoir of resources, but the continent's biggest asset by far is the warmth, friendliness, humility and humanity of its people. This has been the inspiration for the official slogan of the 2010 FIFA World Cup: Ke Nako. Celebrate Africa's Humanity. People in Durban celebrated when the slogan was revealed.
Ke Nako means simply It's time. Because of their passion for the beautiful game, their outstanding players over the years and a perfect destination for soccer fans, the people of South Africa believe that Africa's time has come not only to stage the soccer fest, but also to use the 2010 FIFA World Cup to change perceptions of Africa and reposition the continent in a positive light with South Africa as the theater and Africa the stage.
The slogan Ke Nako. Celebrate Africa's Humanity follows that of A time to make friends, which was used in Germany in last year's finals.
The FIFA 2010 Draw at the ICC in Durban was attended by South African President Thabo Mbeki, and FIFA president Joseph S Blatter, as well as 3000 delegates from FIFA member countries from all around the world. Mbeki has said repeatedly, "We want, on behalf of our continent, to stage an event that will send ripples of confidence from the Cape to Cairo - an event that will create social and economic opportunities throughout Africa. We want to ensure that one day, historians will reflect upon the 2010 FIFA World Cup as a moment when Africa stood tall and resolutely turned the tide on centuries of poverty and conflict. We want to show that Africa's time has come."
